Sponge-Jet Makes Onboard Abrasive Blasting and Painting Operations a Success
March 17, 2009 - Portsmouth, NH

Sponge-Jet, Inc. is now delivering its new RASP Xtreme (Riding) team to ship owners across the world. The combination abrasive blasting and recycling system weighs less than 57kg (270lb) and is the latest in marine industry innovation. “It’s a bright spot during these challenging times, offered Walentin Mirgorod, VP, International, “ship owners no longer have to dry-dock for routine blasting and painting projects. They can keep their working assets on the sea longer because maintenance can be carried out on board during deployment.”

The system starts with a Sponge-Jet RASP™ which propels dry, low dust, reusable Sponge Media™ abrasives to the substrate. The unit is ideal for touching up and feathering where power tools may have been otherwise used. Confined space blasting and corrosion removal in or around sensitive environments are welcomed by ship managers due to the inherent low dust and low rebound media characteristics. The portable production system fits through marine hatchways/man-ways and can achieve the optimum profile required for the coating - 0 to 150+micron (or 6+mils).

The system is complimented by a tandem recycling system, the Sponge-Jet 25-P Recycler™. This light, mobile tag-a-long assures that media volumes reduce down to a tenth of the volume and waste compared to ordinary abrasives products. A simple lock and roll system connects the two units for ease of handling and storage.

“We designed this system for riding teams and other ship personnel to use at sea,’ explains Mirgorod, ‘because it’s often more cost effective to conduct repairs at sea rather than in dry dock.”
