The
latest Navel Sea System Command’s (NAVSEA)
Submarine Maintenance Standard (MS No. 6310-081-015
REV G) now includes the Sponge-Jet technology
as an effective alternative to Power Tool
Cleaning.
The standard approves the use
of Sponge-Jet abrasives for exterior surfaces
and free flood areas as well as on tank interiors
like lube oil tanks, and non-CRES hydraulic
oil tanks - where power tooling is specified
with an SSPC-SP11 or lower. Part and assembly
restoration, like tiller, torque tube and
bearing assemblies (when removed from the
ship or unassembled) are another area where
the technology is permitted.
The use of the Sponge-Jet RASP
(Remote Area Surface Profiling) system is
approved for preparing hard to reach surfaces
in tight corners, where coatings tend to
fail first. The RASP system manages containment,
control, and recycling during cleaning.
“The approval from NAVSEA
comes at a perfect time for yards working
on submarines. The technology addresses the
need to accelerate blasting and painting
operations while lowering risk to sensitive
equipment, the worker and the environment,” said
Michael Merritt, President of Sponge-Jet,
Inc.
Sponge-Jet is head-quartered
in Portsmouth, NH and has a corporate office
in the United Kingdom. They are the world’s
leading manufacturer of dry, low dust abrasive
blasting media and equipment.
